A Jolly Time

I have just returned from a Boston area book tour + illustrator's conference. It was an "all my favorite things" trip! Highlights:
Serving as a judge in the excellent phenomenon known as Literary Death Match:

I'm the one sitting.
Visiting the Cambridge Community Center (Photos by Kirsten Sims)
reading Percy and TumTum
Group drawing!
They were so game.
New best friends.
...had a fine time at very cool establishment Tres Gatos in Jamaica Plain, MA.

and was honored to kick off the Friday Morning Storytime series at Curious George Bookstore in Harvard Square!

The Danforth Museum invited me to come and chat about an event for mid-July. This year I participated in The Giving Tree Project, a unique exhibition in support of children’s literacy.  I was overjoyed to see my artwork displayed in the entrance of the museum store. The Danforth is a gem of a place. They have a fantastic collection curated by very clever and warm staff members. A lovely time.

The biggest event was ICON7, the illustrator's conference, in my old college home of Providence, RI. Eighty-four hours of illustration presentations, advice, discussion, inspiration in one of my absolute favorite places in the world. I loved every single minute of it. So much fantastic work!
And I'm psyched about all the cool new buddies I met.
The auditorium. Art by Chris Buzelli.
Paul Sahre and Brian Rea discussing their recent collaboration, Malcolm Gladwell Collected.

Bacon, pâté, Lingonberries, mesclun and cucumbers on brioche.
Sleeping on couches and in guest rooms for 14 nights made me feel like some kind of touring musician, which is cool because there was a time when I really did want to be a rock star and actually played in a band which opened for the *brag alert* Arcade Fire before they were anybody. I forgot the lyrics mid-song and sang the same verse twice. Fortunately no chords were bungled. That would have been worse.
I have no photo documentation because cameras were not invented yet. It was that long ago.

I am so glad to be home. I am so glad to be glad. Seeya later!

Literary Death Match: Boston

Goodie goodie gumdrops! I get to be a judge in the prestigious Literary Death Match on June 7th in Boston! You are so lucky if you get to go, because there are only 80 tickets being issued. Last time I went to one of these I experienced all 7 human emotions. It's surreal, and all-encompassing at the same time.

Ashly&Dedna Makeover

Today I'm taking the girls to the salon. Ashly's just going for a trim and to get her color brightened, but Dedna needs a lot of work. I hope she doesn't cast a spell on me for re-vamping her look.

Party at BookCourt TONIGHT!

I'm gonna be pouring some wine for all you book lovers this evening at BookCourt in Brooklyn! Come and celebrate the release of Percy and TumTum. 7 PM!

Ouija Outrage

Not sure what's happening here, but it looks like he got some bad news.
"You lie!"
Typical of the sort of thing I find doodled on the backs of unfinished paintings or color studies.

Logo playtime

It's been so, so long since i've been a-posting. What do you think of these logo re-design sketches?
"I'm fancy"

"I look like the Purple Pie-Man."

WHAT ELSE IS NEW:
A tussle with some dust bunnies resulted in a big splinter, AKA 'Sliver'.
I boiled some needles and instruments and, aided by my trusty magnifying lamp, showed it who was boss.
Bye bye, splinter!

TumTum is Coming!

"The contentious relationship between a Dachshund and a Pomeranian escalates to a nail-biting crescendo in this lively picture book. An instant classic."

WTF Wednesday

WTF indeed- it's 60 degrees outside and I would LIKE to be doing this:

"Wheeeeeee!"

Alas, perhaps a bike ride will be just the thing.

"Wheeeeeeee!"
I love love love my bike, by the way. It is HUGE and heavy.
I feel so safe and comfy on it. It is much more to my liking than the thrifted 10-speeds I used to ride.
It's a Batavus Fryslan, in case you are curious.
The scarf is from my friend Patrick.
I have a BIG EYE in this picture because I am always wide-eyed when I ride around the city, both because of the landscapes I'm taking in, and because there are lots of crazy antics in the road and if you don't pay attention you will run over people who wander into the bike lane trying to hail a taxi or take a photo, just like I'm doing in this run-on sentence.
Once I rode past a person who said "VROOM VROOM!".
That was funny.

Character Friday: Beety

He's Beety

"I've got RUTTS for LAYGS!"

He's always in a pickle.
He is the example of how NOT to behave.
People tolerate him because he's just kind of simple
and doesn't know any better, but then he goes too far
and gets an earful anyway.
Oh that Beety!
